What Is CBD?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of over 100 chemical compounds known as cannabinoids found in the cannabis or marijuana plant, Cannabis sativa. Unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which is the main psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis, CBD is not psychoactive. This means that it does not produce the “high” or intoxication that is commonly associated with marijuana or THC.
CBD is extracted from the cannabis plant and then diluted with a carrier oil like coconut or hemp seed oil to produce CBD oil. Due to its potential therapeutic properties, CBD has gained momentum in the health and wellness world. It’s being studied and used for various health issues, including anxiety, chronic pain, epilepsy, and more in both humans and dogs and cats.
For instance, scientists at both Cornell University and Colorado State University have been studying the effects of CBD on dogs, specifically. Cornell’s study showed that CBD for dogs can help with pain management. This study, which looked at dogs with osteoarthritis, showed that more than 80% of the dogs in the study had less pain and were more active when given CBD.
At Colorado State University, scientists have studied the effect of CBD on dogs with epilepsy. While this was a small study, it did show that nearly 90% of the dogs that were given CBD (in conjunction with traditional seizure medications) experienced a reduction in seizures. Again, this was a limited study, but the results are promising and, as many dogs suffer from epilepsy, adding some dog CBD to their daily regimen could make a positive impact.
Another study in Australia found that dogs that were given CBD had a reduction in itching and chewing. Many dogs have skin issues, so this study is promising in that 65% of the dogs in the study saw positive results. If you have a dog prone to itching or skin issues, our CBD oil for dogs or CBD dog treats might be an option to consider.
Many dog owners also have found that CBD treats or oils reduce their dog’s anxiety. While this might be anecdotal, and further studies on the health benefits are needed, we’ve heard from many pet parents that their furry companions were calmer and happier after taking CBD.
Discuss CBD With Your Veterinarian
These days many veterinarians recommend CBD for dogs, and while its use is on the rise, we also encourage dog parents to discuss giving CBD (or any supplement) to their dog with their dog’s doctor. It’s always best to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement or treatment.
Potential side effects of CBD include gastrointestinal upset, dry mouth and fatigue or lethargy. Typically, these are not issues if you consistently use the recommend amount of CBD for your dog, which is based primarily on their size and weight.
Our Dog CBD
We’ve been producing CBD products for dogs for several years now, and we decided to create homemade oils and treats as that allowed us to have complete quality control. We offer dog CBD oil, a holistic CBD “spray” and CBD dog treats. The treats are grain-free and gluten-free as well as free of artificial colors and flavors.
Which is the best option for your furry friend? All of these options contain the same handmade, small-batch CBD, although in different concentrations. In general, it’s always best to start with a small amount of CBD and then watch and see how your dog handles this new addition to their diet.
We have products formulated for small dogs and products for larger breeds to make it as easy as possible to find the best dose for your dog. Our lowest dose of CBD is found in our Naked Dogibles CBD Small Breed Biscuits. Each biscuit contains just 1 mg of CBD. If you want to start out small, this can be a good option.
We also offer Naked Dogibles CBD oil for small breeds, each pump of the sprayer contains just 2 mg of CBD. This can be sprayed onto kibble or your dog’s favorite treat. Getting started with just a milligram or two of CBD can be a good option to consider.
Our products for larger dogs do contain more CBD. For instance, our large breed biscuits each contain 3 mg of CBD. If you have a larger breed, you could just break these bone-shaped biscuits in half at first, although 3 mg is a fairly common dose for a larger breed. The Naked Dogibles CBD spray for larger breeds contains 4 mg of CBD per pump, and this can be given every 12 hours.
Our CBD oil is another option, and this is our strongest formula as each dropper equals 6 mg of CBD. We recommend this higher dose for senior dogs, large breeds and dogs with serious ailments. The oil can be administered every 12 hours and we also recommend that you shake up the oil before use.
The oil and spray contain additional natural ingredients including chamomile essential oil, sweet orange essential oil, coconut oil and vegetable glycerin. Each ingredient was selected carefully to enhance the benefits of the oil and spray. We also consulted with veterinarians as we began formulating our CBD to ensure that each ingredient was safe for our precious pets.
Chamomile, for instance, may help soothe irritated skin, reduce anxiety and help dogs prone to an upset tummy. Sweet orange oil also may help reduce anxiety and soothe the skin. Coconut oil also may help to ease skin issues, reduce pain from arthritis and reduce digestive problems in dogs.
